(UPDATED): Restoran Puteri, Sg. Penchala

I have grown to love Malay food ever since I learnt to eat spicy food at the age of nine.
My late grandmother would make her famous Laksa Utara, sambal belacan, curry, nasi lemak, rendang and many other delicious Malay delicacies.
My favourite makan season of the year is the fasting month and Hari Raya.
BF and I would hunt for buka puasa buffets or we would just buy lots of yummy food from any pasar Ramadhan and head home to stuff ourselves  😛
During Hari Raya month, all I do is attending Raya open house.
Anyway, let me introduce you to Restoran Puteri.
I have seen this restaurant and walked at its kaki lima all my entire life as there’s a branch in TTDI (not to be confused with the branch near Sg. Penchala).
Somehow, I have never paid attention to it because I thought it was just a normal Malay restaurant.
My colleague recently mentioned to me that she used to go to Puteri in Brickfields for their lunch buffet every Friday.
She sang high praises of the food.
Delicious home cooked traditional Malay food at only RM30.00 nett(!!) per person.
Wow, seriously???!!
….
….
….
Well, not really.
BF and I went to its largest branch (double storey building) which is located at the border of Sg. Penchala and TTDI.
We asked the staff about the lunch buffet and was informed that it is temporarily unavailable until further notice.
The lady then said that they may reintroduce it soon. No promises though.
So at the moment, they only have the Nasi Campur style lunch.
Just take any dishes you like and they will charge you accordingly.(Note: Please scroll down for the latest updates on Puteri)

BF has been eyeing the sambal paru (beef lung) ever since he walked in  😛
More dishes on another corner.
Ulam and kerabu corner.
There is also dessert section but I didn’t take a photo of it.
BF’s choices: Ayam Kampung Goreng, Tauhu Goreng and Sambal Paru.
My plate of Ikan Keli Goreng, Kobis Goreng and Kari Ayam.
Absolutely love the curry.
Siput Sedut Masak Cili Padi.
My mom and aunty often cook this but I have never eaten it as the siput looks gross.
BF coaxed me to try it.
Sucking out the ‘isi’ was really challenging for me. And let’s not mention the funny sound I produced with my mouth during the siput sucking process.

The siput was surprisingly delicious and appetizing.
The gravy was tasty too. It was a little spicy but goes well with rice.
This dish was definitely the star of our meal.

Labu Masak Lemak.
This was a tad salty but it was still delicious.
The lemakness from the santan was just right.
Lime Juice (RM3.50 nett)

We paid RM40.00 for the food (not including the lime juice).
The price is reasonable as we truly enjoyed all dishes.
Fun Fact: Restoran Puteri is owned by the famous 70s and 80s actress, Rubiah Suparman who is known to be a great cook. She also has written several cook books.

Updated on 20 May 2013: We are happy to inform that the famous lunch buffet is back. Price per person is RM33.00 nett. Drinks are not included and will be charged separately.
We went to the buffet on last Saturday.
Here are some pics which I took on that day.
There were about a dozen dishes (lauk), not including kerabu, rojak, soto and Laksa Johor.
My two favourite dishes of the day.
Siput Sedut Masak Cili Padi and Sambal Sotong.
Ulam and Rojak.
Left: Ayam Masak Lemak Cili Padi
Right: Ikan Asam Pedas
Left: Taufu & Tempeh Goreng
Middle: Paru Goreng
Right: Ayam Goreng Rempah
Coffee is included in the buffet.
Next to the coffee section is Mushroom Soup and Soto.
This was my first helping 🙂
We had two bowls of these delicious siput sedut.
Ayam Masak Lemak Cili Padi.
BF really liked it. He had more than 5 pieces of chicken.
I had this Laksa Johor.
It was okay, I still prefer Laksa Utara though.
Too bad they didn’t have it on that day.
The dessert section comprises of mostly traditional Malay kuihs.
There were also Bubur Hitam and Pengat Pisang.

The Seri Muka was a bit dry 🙁
Overall, the food was good even though there weren’t many choices.
At RM33.00, I think it’s very reasonable as you will be able to enjoy many delicious Malay dishes.
We totally recommended this place for all masakan kampung lovers 🙂
