Muhibbah Seafood Restaurant, Sg. Penchala

admin Avatar
Muhibbah Restaurant has been around as long as I could remember.
It serves halal Chinese dishes.
For us, this is one of the few good Chinese Muslim restaurants in Klang Valley.
Menu.
They have a new logo now….a daun pisang  🙂
A short history of Muhibbah.
As far as I could remember, they used to operate from a stall located in front of Restoran OK before moving to shoplots at Rahim Kajai.
The location in Rahim Kajai was good but finding a parking space was a huge problem especially dinner hours.

At the current location (sorry, can’t remember when did they move to Sg. Penchala), parking is not an issue at all. You can park along the road and Muhibbah has employed some Pak Ciks to assist you.
Oh yah, you can even ride in their golf buggy if you’re too lazy to walk  😛

The new location (actually not so new lah) provides Muhibbah the much needed space.
I believe the premise was formerly a bungalow.
There’s even a stage.
So some of you may want to have your bersanding and kenduri here  🙂

We were here at 6.00pm, 30 minutes before they were opened.
Hence the empty tables and chairs.
Do make a reservation if you are coming in big group or during peak hours.

Peanuts and wet towels (RM2.60)Nuts for you to munch before dinner.
Tauhu San Kong Style (RM11.00 – small)
My must order whenever I’m here.
Braised Japanese tofu with some vegetables and chicken. One of their signature dishes.

Seafood Tomyam (RM11.00 – small)
Their version of Tom Yam is not too spicy but the sourness was just perfect.
The tom yam is cooked with some squids, tiny prawns, chicken fillet, vegetables and button mushroom.
I like it as it is not spicy but BF who is a tom yam fanatic thinks it was just so-so.
Besides that, we find that there’s no difference between the portion for small and medium serving.
Steamed Thai Style Siakap (RM48.80)
Please note that the price is according to weight.
The waiter/ waitress will ask you if you prefer a small, medium or large fish.
However when we were there, we had no choice but to take a medium sized fish as they have ran out of smaller ones.
They have other type of fishes, so do ask the staff.

We both love this dish very much.
The fish was fresh and delicious.
Cooked with lots of lemongrass, shallots, ginger, celery etc.
I think they also used pickled garlic (jeruk bawang putih) which really helps to enhance the taste of this dish, making it sour but not too much.

Sweet and Sour LaLa (RM12.00 – small)
It says in the menu that the lala are flown in from Philippines.
The clams were quite plump and tasted good.
We couldn’t tell what was used to cook the sauce as it didin’t taste like the usual Chinese style sweet and sour sauce.
Anyway, this dish was quite nice. All clams were fresh and none came with mud when opened  😛

* New photo from our recent visit. We ordered something new 🙂 *

Chili Cockles (medium serving…I think it was RM17.00)
Oh this was good!
Spicy yet so delicious. Very appetizing.
The half-shelled cockles were not overcooked. Thank you Chef  🙂
My only complaint is that the dish was a tiny bit salty.
Overall, I would say that this is the dish that BF and I will always order whenever we are here…besides his Tomyam and my Tauhu San Kong  😛

** More new photos. We just love Muhibbah 🙂 **

Chinese style fried rice.
One of the many popular dishes here.
It’s just a simple fried rice but I was satisfied with the portion and taste.
The rice was not too oily and the shrimps were fresh and sweet.
Fried Siakap with Soy Sauce and Chopped Garlic.
This dish didn’t work for us, unfortunately.
We find that it was too salty and oily.
I think it would be better to steam the fish instead of frying it.
Fried Taufu
Another dish that was below par.
It tasted weird, we just can’t figure it out.

Ma Po Tofu.
Slightly spicy and salty but overall it was delicious.
A good companion with white rice.
They ran out of siakap on that night, so we ordered Ikan Kerapu instead.
The fish was big (almost 1kg) and fresh.
But we still prefer siakap to be cooked this way.
Fried Siakap in Sweet and Sour Style.
It was just average.
The Steamed Siakap In Thai Style is still our firm favourite  🙂

Only JAKIM as in Malaysia context could check on the ingredients being used to ensure its compliance with Halal in Islam. We as consumers will not be able to know for sure unless we inspect the kitchen and the butchery where the meat was sourced from.

This is a stigma I have seen for the longest time. Muslims would not hesitate to walk into a mamak restaurant, even a indian restaurant. Some even western restaurants. But why oh why always always have doubt on chinese muslim ?

Athira Tan…you are absolutely spot on. Some Malays/Muslim have prejudice with Chinese Muslim restaurants and yet would willingly walk into an Indian banana leaf restaurant! Is the famous Raju or Khanna Curry House certified halal by Jakim? Is the owner an Indian Muslim?? Chill la Mohamedsha Mislam…wallahualam. Saya melayu Islam duduk di TTDI.

As far as I know the owners are not Chinese Muslim. They are just serving Chinese Halal food =)

Athirah, you are right. When I first moved to KL in 1990, I had the shocked of my life when I came across Muslims eating at Indian stalls and shops nonchalantly without the slightest worry if the food served were halal. I had even seen on different occasions men with kopiah and women in tudungs patronizing such shops. From where I come from in Penang, where the Indian Muslims population is large, Muslims know that they could only patronize shops where not only the halal logo is displayed prominently, where most of the servers wore kopiah themselves, and the ayat Quran is displayed just about everywhere.

  9. […] admin | April 5, 2013 | Asian, Chinese | 4 Comments We were in Kelana Jaya yesterday to try the famous Fend Ikan Bakar. Too bad it was not opened for dinner. So I suggested Mohd Chan Restaurant which is just a stone away from Fend Ikan Bakar. I have always wanted to try Mohd Chan’s dishes as I know it is a very popular makan place for Chinese Muslim food. BF had a bad feeling about this place even before we stepped into the restaurant. In this case, we both can’t help but to compare this place with Muhibbah Restaurant. […]
